Trusted Volunteer Program – focuses on recruiting volunteers from outside of the educational community, such as retired community members and other individuals that may not have a child in the school system. To help make these volunteers feel comfortable and confident on a school campus, the Ed Trust developed an extensive Volunteer Handbook and training program. To ensure the safety of students and staff, each volunteer must pass an extensive background check.
Teachers and students in the Big Bear Valley continue to be challenged by decreased funding and increased class sizes. The Big Bear Valley Education Trust is committed to supporting teachers and students facing these challenges by providing them with the services of “Trusted Volunteers.” Working in kindergarten through Grade 12 classrooms, Trusted Volunteers give individual attention to those children needing additional assistance, individually or in small groups. Some work in computer labs, read aloud to students or help with art projects. Others listen to children read or help them with math. The Common Core Curriculum being implemented in schools this year is project based. Having another adult to assist students as they work on these projects will be invaluable to student learning in this setting. Everyone who cares about children and education is a potential Trusted Volunteer (TV). Prior teaching experience is not necessary. The Trust is looking for parents, grandparents, extended family members, retired people, students, community members, senior citizens, and business people. If you recognize that well educated children are our greatest natural resource and you have the desire to support and enrich the work of school staff then apply now to be a Trusted Volunteer.
